JAMB and ME: To whom it may concern;
When life becomes so challenging, people often say “No one said it was going to be easy” but here is the truth “No one said it was going to be hard either” Life is what it is.
Trust me, if there was anyone who wants his life to be perfect, to be as clear as the morning sky and to be as green as Scotland, That would be me! But like I said earlier “Life is what it is“.
Having heard the recent news of the Joint Admission Matriculation board decrease of cutoff mark to 120 is one of the most absurd thing to hear. I believe reducing the cutoff mark literally means reducing the standard of Education which has already been badly over stretched and this would rather make it more difficult for students to get into universities.. If there is a problem with education like there is today in any just society, I’d say we focus more on students and ask necessary questions like;
●why are students failing jamb?
●Do they enjoy learning and why?
●Is the environment conducive for learning?
The sole purpose of education is learning, if there is no learning going on, education isn’t going on. Frankly I was disturbed when I heard the news because it only tells me one thing, that JAMB has reduced the expectation they want from students so it can only get worse from 120 to maybe 50 and that what frightens me. By the way, you expect much from whom more was given to, so I’d say jamb is trying to shy away from their responsibilities..
I’m actually quite certained that prominent schools will never succumb to accept students with a score of 120, and I’m not trying to justify the poor and dilapidating standard of Education in our country, Neither do I believe that JAMB otherwise University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) could be the best way to test the ability of students, No! Of course Not!!. What I think is that, if JAMB is the only way to test the ability of students to get into universities at least for now, then students have to pass it. How???
By stimulating learning process,
By making learning enjoyable, by given meaning to learning.
Creating more room to accommodate student into universities,
Conducting fairness in exams,
Encourage flexibility in learning and boosting creativity.
I never wanted to write about this but this story chose me, I hope it chooses you too. #smatalks #education #Jamb#Utme #exam #jointheconversation #Nigeria
